چکیده

The goal of tracking the origin of short, distinctive phrases (memes) that propagate through the web in reaction to current events has been formalized as DAG Partitioning: given a directed acyclic graph, delete edges of minimum weight such that each resulting connected component of the underlying undirected graph contains only one sink. Motivated by NP-hardness and hardness of approximation results, we consider the parameterized complexity of this problem. We show that it can be solved in O(2 · n) time, where k is the number of edge deletions, proving fixed-parameter tractability for parameter k. We then show that unless the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH) fails, this cannot be improved to 2 ·n; further, DAG Partitioning does not have a polynomial kernel unless NP ⊆ coNP/poly. Finally, given a tree decomposition of width w, we show how to solve DAG Partitioning in 2 ) ·n time, improving a known algorithm for the parameter pathwidth.

Symbolic Partitioning and Scheduling of Parameterized Task Graphs

The DAG-based task graph model has been found effective in scheduling for performance prediction and optimization of parallel applications. However the scheduling complexity and solution normally depend on the problem size. In this paper, we propose a symbolic scheduling scheme for a parameterized task graph which models coarse-grain DAG parallelism independent of the problem size. The algorith...

The Complexity of Tree Partitioning

Given a tree T on n vertices, and k, b, s1, . . . , sb ∈ N, the Tree Partitioning problem asks if at most k edges can be removed from T so that the resulting components can be grouped into b groups such that the number of vertices in group i is si, for i = 1, . . . , b. The case when s1 = · · · = sb = n/b, referred to as the Balanced Tree Partitioning problem, was shown to be NP-complete for tr...

Fixed-Parameter Algorithms for DAG Partitioning

Finding the origin of short phrases propagating through the web has been formalized by Leskovec et al. [ACM SIGKDD 2009] as DAG PARTITIONING: given an arc-weighted directed acyclic graph on n vertices and m arcs, delete arcs with total weight at most k such that each resulting weakly-connected component contains exactly one sink—a vertex without outgoing arcs. DAG PARTITIONING is NP-hard. We sh...

Digraph width measures in parameterized algorithmics

In contrast to undirected width measures such as tree-width, which have provided many important algorithmic applications, analogous measures for digraphs such as directed tree-width or DAG-width do not seem so successful. Several recent papers have given some evidence on the negative side. We confirm and consolidate this overall picture by thoroughly and exhaustively studying the complexity of ...

A Parameterized Bounded-Depth Frege is Not Optimal

A general framework for parameterized proof complexity was introduced by Dantchev, Martin, and Szeider [2007]. There the authors show important results on tree-like Parameterized Resolution—a parameterized version of classical Resolution—and their gap complexity theorem implies lower bounds for that system. The main result of the present paper significantly improves upon this by showing optimal...
